Proverbs 7:25 (CEV) — 25 Don’t even think about that kind of woman or let yourself be misled by someone like her.

Usually I write as Solomon has written, to the young men (or old) because this advice (wisdom) is framed towards them, but I have seen something else this morning – something for young woman and for those who mentor them.

There is a woman to stay away from and here in chapter 7 she is quite a “loose” woman. I would like to propose something to the women - don’t be like this woman! I remember being young and talking with the guys of this world. They all wanted a girlfriend who was fun and “loose”, but that isn’t the woman they wanted to settle down with. Young men who have little or no relationship with God are after fun which includes sex. They looked for a pretty, flirtatious and “easy” (I don’t know what it is called today) woman who they could bed easily. They would look for the provocatively dressed young lady as the first sign of someone who is open to sex on the first or second date. However, most of these guys didn’t want to settle down with these girls – yes even worldly guys knew better!

Women, don’t look like, act like, flirt like, dress like or be anything like these types of women! Don’t be easy to get to bed and don’t be easy to get into relationship! You are not hard up for a date because dating does not define you nor does being able to have a guy take you to bed. You are a beautiful creation of God who deserves respect, so dress like it and act like it. Do not offer yourself to a man physically or visually until your pastor pronounces you man and wife, make him earn it! Do not be as this woman on the street trying to captivate and allure, but be worthy of effort, propriety and courtship. You are worth more than satisfying a man’s cravings, you are worth Christ! Remember who your Daddy is and believe His assessment of you is right!

Proverbs 6:7 (CEV) — 7 Ants don’t have leaders,

Isn’t it interesting that things get done without someone telling them to do it? I am not saying that we shouldn’t have leaders or that we don’t need leaders, we certainly do have a Shepherd who is our leader! However, ants are intuitive enough to know what must be done in order to survive and function and I would like to postulate that within each of us is a leader that is wanting to come out.

Training is what we lack or need to become better leaders. We all know when it is time to eat and go potty and we lead ourselves to this and many other simple functions. Some need to develop into leaders and some into greater leaders, but all of us have the capability to lead! We have THE Leader within us! You have what it takes – lead yourself, lead others, and when you are at your end, let yourself be led by a leader of God’s choosing who will lead you to greater things, which will enable you to lead others higher and higher!

Proverbs 5 is all about the immoral woman. It talks about an unfaithful woman who wants to have sex with men. As I read it today I thought about it in a more modern context – pornography.

Proverbs 5:8–9 (CEV) — 8 Stay away from a bad woman! Don’t even go near the door of her house. 9 You will lose your self-respect and end up in debt to some cruel person for the rest of your life.

We men (and women) don’t have to walk down the street to be tempted and lead astray sexually anymore, we need to go no further than any screen in our home. The movie channels bring full pornography in living color into our homes on our 55” 3D TV’s and if you don’t have that, you have a computer that can bring up images within seconds that will all drag your soul to hell!

I remember the scene in “Fireproof” where the main character took his computer outside and took a bat to it – now that is staying away! With all of the accountability programs out there we all have no excuse to walk this walk alone. I know that pornography addiction/slavery is a hard one to beat, but it is doable! The first thing you have to do get honest with yourself and repent (change your mind). Then you MUST have a buddy that will help you through to victory that is right around the corner! So stay away from that stuff, that garbage, that stuff that will take your self-respect and decide to “crush it” with the power of God!

Proverbs 4:26 (CEV) — 26 Know where you are headed, and you will stay on solid ground.

Fabulous! Have you ever noticed when you buy a certain type of car, let’s say an Audi, all of a sudden you see Audis everywhere! Before you bought one you saw a few here or there, but after… That is the way it is when God gives you revelation. All of a sudden when you read the Word you see it everywhere! Here is another example for me of “seeing it” and I hope it is for you too!

KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING! So simple, so wise, so encouraging but I just glossed over these words of life for years. I love planning vacations to the tee! I love to have things planned like Easter performances. I nearly love having my day planned! However, God has been giving me the Holy Ghost cattle prod toward planning according to “the vision”. Having things planned is not good enough, because planned events are not the end goal. The end goal is where will you be at the end of the year, at the end of 5 and at the end of 10 years. Planning your day so productivity is maximized and frustration and stress is minimized is wonderful, but planning your DAYS according to the vision God gives you is better! So know where you are heading, that way you will stay on the solid ground you long to be on!

Proverbs 3:7–8 (CEV) — 7 Don’t ever think that you are wise enough, but respect the Lord and stay away from evil. 8 This will make you healthy, and you will feel strong.

Who doesn’t like to be healthy and feel strong? However, are we willing to make the choices to get there? Most would say of course but have another helping of…, or allow stress to control them or think negatively or…. Most would cling to the phrase “don’t ever think you are wise enough”, and simply conclude that one must be humble and think you have not arrived, but it goes way beyond what we think of as humble. It is a place of complete reliance and respect enough to do what God is saying to do. It ISN’T being a good boy and girl! It is putting the wisdom, will and Word of God into action in your life – THEN you will be healthy and you will feel strong!

Sometimes we have gone down the road of illness and weakness and it is going to take some time to get back to health and strength, but don’t give up! God is ready to take you to health and strength! He may tell you to change the way you think or the way you cope or the way you eat or to start exercising – DO IT! He will lead you! However, if you have in your heart and head an attitude of, “I don’t have to do that to be healthy and strong”, then you may have disqualified yourself by thinking you are wise enough! Let God lead you into health and strength – It is yours to have and hold! It will glorify Him! He is amazing and is well able to bring about His Word in your life! Do it!

Proverbs 2:4 (CEV) — 4 Search for wisdom as you would search for silver or hidden treasure.

How would you search for silver? If someone hid some silver in your house, let say 25 pounds of it, (currently around $34 an ounce), how hard would you look for it? Hidden treasure speaks of something hidden, (deep huh?). The reality is that you would search high and low for it! In fact you wouldn’t stop or take a break or watch an episode of “The Voice” or have friends over for dinner or anything else until you found it. If you had a lottery ticket worth 4 million IN your house…., you are getting this right? Apply the same principle, the same desire, the same intensity and the same hope to wisdom that can not only prosper you financially, but will prosper every area of your life. So this month start SEARCHING and don’t just “read” the Proverbs. Find something everyday!

Proverbs 1:4–5 (CEV) — 4 From these, an ordinary person can learn to be smart, and young people can gain knowledge and good sense. 5 If you are already wise, you will become even wiser. And if you are smart, you will learn to understand

Here is the promise – come and get it! I think I have become more extraordinary than ordinary, smart the average, wiser with greater understanding, but it has come with a price! We all have this disposition from our society that we must fight against, something for nothing. It is clear that we as American’s have given up the American Dream for the “Great Give-Away” because the American dream meant you have to work your behind off!

People – I strongly encourage you to read the Proverbs and gain all that God has for you! It will take effort and work, but this first chapter reminds us that it is all worth it! We will need it someday and when that day comes, we will call on wisdom to guide us. Really this is not that much of a payment! The benefits are so great! As we start reading for the third time in 2012, let’s believe that this is more than an exercise in religiousness. I plan on gaining even more wisdom as I think deeply every day of the grand wisdom of God. Join me!

Proverbs 31:3 (NKJV) — 3 Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.

Without doing any research into what “do not give your strength to women” may have meant when written and to whom it was written, it sure did scream at me to warn the youth of today! Young people today give their strength to frivolous dating relationships and as well to “serious” “going steady” relationships and here in the Word of God it is saying not to do that. I may not be able to make a case against dating, but surly a case can be made for a wholesale investment in dating! This behavior is not “cute” or “harmless”, it is dangerous or God wouldn’t have included this in His Word. Don’t give your strength to it young people, and you old people, stop encouraging it! Young people today start dating someone and all of their free time, money, energy goes into the relationship. Friends are forgotten, grades decline and even God is held at bay while people’s hearts are given away too quickly.

Lest you think that I want everyone to remain single (like the Apostle Paul), I think courting with marriage in mind is the proper way to have relationship. The difference between courting and dating is motive. Courting ends in marriage and dating ends a broken heart (because the motive was selfish). I know that is a generalization, but it is generally true.

There is another way to look at this passage which is that a king isn’t supposed to give his strength away to any woman. In other words, my strength remains in me and not in my wife or mother. I am the one who makes decisions and leads and I as a king don’t rely on anyone else to make my decisions for me. I am not saying that a wife has no say, a man would be stupid to not include her since they are one, but too many men give away all of their kingly power and responsibilty to the woman who was not made to receive it. We are partners with each having their own strength – let each one use their own!

Proverbs 30:15–16 (NKJV) — 15 The leech has two daughters— Give and Give! There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, “Enough!”: 16 The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water— And the fire never says, “Enough!”

More, more, more is the cry of a foolish child. I am afraid in my adult life I have been like the leech, the grave, the barren womb, the dry earth and the fire! How about you? How satisfied can we be with less or in our culture, old? When talking with people about our love of camping they jokingly talk about their idea of camping is the Hilton. Is there no satisfaction unless we are pampered? I am not talking about selling all of your nice things and replacing them with junk, but there does come a time when we are to “give ourselves a checkup on our craving factor”. We understand the cry of a barren womb, totally reasonable. We understand the earth desiring water so it can produce it’s crop and the thirst of fire for more fuel and oxygen, and even the picture of the grave, although a dark reference, but the leech…. ? Give me more, give me more, I want more is the cry of a 3 year old who doesn’t want to share and we are not like that!

Our lives have become God’s life which was to give more instead of cry give me more. We are satisfied with what we have until God births something in us for more, then we properly seek it, pray for it, believe for it and attain it. I love camping and I loved staying at the St. Regis! I am thankful for my pop-up trailer and when God puts a desire in my heart for a motorhome, I’ll go after that, but until then, I thank God for what I have.

Today, turn your voice toward heaven and thank Him for all that you have! Start with your relationship with God and move on to your body, then move to your soul, go on toward your material possessions and end with your relationships. Tell God how blessed you are and how you are satisfied with His provision. If there happens to be something that God wants you attain in any area of life, begin to thank Him for that too, because if you will believe for it, it will be yours!

Proverbs 28:1 (NIV84) — 1 The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

Have you ever walked through an empty parking garage and felt THAT fear rise up within you? Nobody was there, but there was that “feeling” you had. Maybe it was a spiritual sensing in truth, but maybe it was too many episodes of Criminal Minds! We all have fears in life, however the wicked has more – why? I think it is because he has NOBODY but himself to trust! That is one of the differences between the righteous and the wicked. Here God illustrates the confidence of the righteous with the picture of a lion. Are you a lion?

You may say, of course I am as bold as a lion, but in fact you are more like a house cat. Maybe you can admit that you act like a house cat more than a lion, that is a good starting place. We are not people who run away from anything except when God tells us to run! (Like from youthful lusts). Because we trust in God and KNOW that His is our shield, we are bold as lions! Lions mark their territory and challenge anyone who tries to enter it. That is what we are like! We are bold and undaunted by danger, peril whether real or perceived. Put this confession on your lips and start acting with bold confidence! And the next time you are in a dark and empty parking garage and feel that fear, laugh at it!

Proverbs 27:18 (NIV84) — 18 He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after his master will be honored.

Somehow someone sold us into a slavery mentality. It has crept in to our society’s fabric and if we are not careful, it will catch us, or we will catch it like a bad virus! It seems that standing in line has become the thing we are to tend to in order to gain provision of one sort or another. Where did the thought go that if you don’t plant you won’t eat?

When you tend to something, that something will produce! When you keep passing on by and just looking at it, then it probably won’t produce. The tending and eating connection is throughout our lives and not just for finances. If you don’t tend to your marriage, it will become bad or broken. If you don’t tend to your schooling you will get an F or be kicked out. If you don’t tend to your car you will most likely be stranded in a place you wished you weren’t. If you don’t tend to your thoughts, you will be overrun with toxic thoughts and thereby have even your body weakened. Floating is a leisure activity meant to give rest to a person on a summer’s afternoon, not get us anywhere in life. Tend to things and watch them grow! Then you will enjoy their fruit!

Proverbs 26:20–22 (NIV84) — 20 Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. 21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. 22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.

Complaining and grumbling go deep within a man and there they grow. In verse 22 the phrase “they go down to a man’s inmost parts,” could be interpreted to mean, they go deep within a man to a private place, to the “womb” or a place of development. When you think about it, you know it is true. When people are complaining there is this power that enjoins you to complain. Talk radio is a bunch of complainers for the most part – and there is no shortage of listeners. There is a chord that is struck within us that can grab the grumblings and make them our own, only to further develop them.

However, remove the grumblings from your life, the complainings from your ears and you won’t have the inner or outer strife that is caused by your own churning. Don’t listen to it, don’t allow it in your presence, don’t put your foot in that trap! We don’t want to be rude to people who are complaining or grumbling, but I say, BE RUDE! Tell them to stop, change the subject or counteract what they just said with praise to God.

There is “drama” in the life of many people, the kind of drama that BUILDS strife, quarrels and division. We are not those who live like that. We are people who take the wood out of the fire, who put away the charcoal so “drama” is not allowed to exist. We are unifiers and lovers, so whatever we could grumble about, we choose not to because we are in Christ and Christ is in us.

Proverbs 25:15 (NIV84) — 15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Most people these days persuade or manipulate or convince by sarcasm or intimidation through intense or violent speech. Sarcasm makes people feel small of course and thereby manipulates them into giving in. However, that approach wouldn’t affect a king. In fact, you would be reviled by the king! (Or lose your head!) Violent speech is another avenue of many to intimidate people into making a decision. It is the wild eye, you are going to do this if you know what is good for you type of intense speaking that pushes people into a corner of agreement or a fight (or even worse, you will lose my relationship with you if you don’t…), and many will go with the agreement. Again, this won’t work on a king! However what will work is tenderness. With a king you can’t bully your way to getting what you want, but through patience and humble and confident gentleness, a king can be persuaded. In fact the picture here is that tenderness of speech can break a bone which goes against the NATURAL way of breaking a bone!

The other thing to consider here is how you will allow yourself to be persuaded. If you are a king and you know it, you will not be bullied into ANYTHING! When you know you are royalty, you will pity people who try to intimidate you! We don’t have to render punishment, because we are not those types of kings. One thing is for sure though, we are NOT kings to be controlled by ANY type of speech that seeks to control. I know who I am, how about you?

Proverbs 24:11 (NKJV) — 11 Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.

There is a responsibility to all of us to reach past our arms, our homes. We have a command from the Lord to do something beyond ourselves. The verse above has been used in many applications including the pro-life movement. We are supposed to be doing something to help those who need some help, especially those who are about to die! The application is far and wide, but there is one thing for certain, we are supposed to get involved.

Have you ever seen those TV shows where they create a situation of some sort and then watch to see if people will get involved? Somebody is fighting, somebody is stealing or other things and so many people do NOTHING! They figure it “isn’t any of their business”, but they are wrong! We are called to help others in trouble!

Of course this can be taken spiritually as it should be. People are on the road to hell and we need to tell them! Use wisdom in regards to how to deliver the message of the Savior, but deliver the message! Get involved in someone’s life and show them the love of Christ. They need you to tell them!

Proverbs 23:4 (NKJV) — 4 Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease!

So if you aren’t laboring to be rich, are you laboring to only exist or just make it for the month? Is that what this is saying? NO! This is properly saying a wonderfully freeing thing that I needed just this day. Although I am not laboring to be rich, I may be overworking a bit. How about you? The point here is don’t work yourself to death for any reason, especially to get rich! In fact, don’t work yourself to stress damage either! Nothing is worth it! The second part of the verse implores us to use our understanding to take a break!

For some this is as easy as pie, for others, this is not so easy. The burden of making enough feels heavy at times. Whether we have over extended ourselves financially or are living reasonably or even if we have cut all non-essentials, the burden remains. I think what God wants of us is to work hard and then to rest. To pay attention to His voice saying, “enough” and to be o.k. with that. Sometimes it is hard to trust Him in this, but it is harder to keep going and do actual damage to your body because of overworking yourself. Oh you may not feel any damage, but don’t be fooled by your feelings or by your youth. Have some understanding and cease!

Proverbs 22:1 (NKJV) — 1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

I know that nearly everyone wants great riches. I would be nice if we are honest. To be able to give whenever you are prompted, to be able to not worry about having enough, to go to the store and buy what you want – like steak for dinner every day! I’m getting hungry! Silver and gold of course are riches and these days, I wish I had a few hundred pounds of them! However, It would be better for me, for all of us, to have two other very important things, a good name and loving favor.

To walk into a room and have favor would be much better than riches! To not be in a room and be spoken about with great favor would be great! A great name is so hard to attain! It is easy to loose and difficult to gain, but it can be done. When your name is said, people have a logical and emotional reaction of favorability. As well, wouldn’t you rather have doors opened to you? That is what favor will do! Favor will get you into places that only favor can get you into! Sure riches can get you into places, you could buy your way in, however favor doesn’t depend on your riches, it depends on God’s provision. I will take the favor of God that drips like honey and a good name over riches of any type, for the true riches of the Kingdom can only be attained though favor, not through riches.

Proverbs 21:29 (NKJV) — 29 A wicked man hardens his face, But as for the upright, he establishes his way.

The NLT put is like this:

Proverbs 21:29 (NLT) — 29 The wicked bluff their way through, but the virtuous think before they act.

Either way two things are true, the righteous or upright give thought to their ways and the wicked have a certain look.

People who have a “hard” look or who have a proud look are trouble. Can you imagine the look of Jesus? Even when he was rebuking the disciples, His look must have been love – He personified love! People with a hard or proud look are either really practiced at that look and therefore it comes natural to them, or they are consciously putting on an air. Either way, it is a sad state because it doesn’t resemble who they really think they are on the inside. It is fake! Someone who knows who they are doesn’t have to put on anything – they just are!

I don’t know about you, but I want to have a face of kindness and love, of care and concern and one of security in who I am. I don’t want to pretend to be anybody, but want to show by my face that I am confident in who I am – a man of God who walks in the authority and power of the Holy Spirit and in the love of God.

Proverbs 20:5 (NKJV) — 5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out.

When I talk with people who have a serious decision before them, I try to help them articulate what they already believe. Those of us in Christ know what to do, it just has to be brought out. So I ask questions and help people discover what they truly believe is the right decision. It is much easier however to make their decision for them or to tell them what they believe in their heart, but it is better for people to self-discover rather than be told what to do.

Proverbs 19:15 (NKJV) — 15 Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, And an idle person will suffer hunger.

First of all let’s look at the lazy for a minute and make sure we don’t fall into that category. They sleep a lot! In fact this is a particularly deep sleep and it reminds me of sleeping right through your alarm! OK, most of us don’t fall into this category, but how about our kids? Hmmm…..

Sometimes we, in the name of compassion and of love and mercy, circumvent the hand of the Lord. What I mean is that we allow people who sleep a lot and deeply and to be idle, to continue to eat! Idle here means more than doing nothing, it means slacking off with deceit! We sometimes allow people to pretend to be looking for work or changing their ways to not suffer hunger which is what they SHOULD suffer! When you go hungry, it is a motivator! However, some of us believe in taking this motivation away and have applied the broken welfare system of this country to people we know or our own family. Welfare puts people in bondage! It is an insidious spirit that holds people back from ever excelling in anything because it averts the natural judgments (motivators) of God. We cannot be people who in the name of mercy or compassion hold people back from the judgment that they need – they need to feel the judgment in order to change! I am not saying don’t feed the hungry or care for the poor – not at all. If I did I would be disagreeing with many scriptures and specifically proverbs, however I am saying what the Word is saying and that is that lazy people should suffer hunger.

Proverbs 18:14 (NKJV) — 14 The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But who can bear a broken spirit?

Truth #1 The spirit of a man is more valuable, important and stronger that his body

Truth #2 You can have a broken spirit

Truth #3 When you have a broken (stricken) spirit it is very difficult be lifted up

Truth #4 The body is affected more by the spirit than the converse

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV) — 22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.

Even as we become wise and have health and life by applying the simple wisdom of God to our body, mind and soul, the most important part of us remains the spirit. From our spirit flows the life giving water that Jesus talked about in John 7. Even our thoughts, our deep inner thoughts are only known by our spirit. (1 Cor. 2) Our spirit (those who know Christ as Savior) is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and therefore this proverb is all the more true for us! The point here is to feed your spirit first! Life flows from it and you have to pay attention to it. You can exercise and eat right, think right and emote right, but if your spirit is starving, then you will at some point come to the end of yourself. However, if you are thinking right, you will feed your spirit because your thinking is right! So keep reading God’s Word, talking to Him about it and meditating deeply on it, you spirit, soul and body will thank you.

Sometime we think we act in a vacuum. What I mean is that there is not much or no consequence for our actions that will really come to roost. We understand that we may get in trouble for something, but too much of the time we are not aware of the spiritual realm implications for what we do.

Proverbs 17:13 (NKJV) — 13 Whoever rewards evil for good, Evil will not depart from his house.

Now that is some implication! When you give evil for good, you are basically shaking your hand with the enemy (in this case personified as evil) and inviting him into your house. The spirit realm is as real as the physical realm and when we do evil as in giving back evil when someone has done us good, (like when someone give you a gift and you complain that it isn’t enough, or when someone compliments you and you return with a criticism), then you will be rewarded with that same spirit IN your house, who is not going to leave because he has been invited in by your own words!

There is hope in Christ because we have authority to kick out evil, but he (evil) will laugh at us unless we repent and show fruits of our repentance. There are people who want to order evil around yet they themselves are captive by evil. Evil will not leave your home, your dwelling, your life unless you stop doing evil! Yes you have authority in Christ, but you are not closing the door, but you are leaving it open by your life. So close that door and kick evil out for good by being a person who returns good for evil.

Proverbs 16:3 (NKJV) — 3 Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established.

If you are committing your works and deeds, what you are doing unto the Lord, then your thoughts will be fixed! What a great promise! If our thoughts are fixed, then we will remember them! We won’t have to relearn, rememorize, re-anything because we will have it! There is within a person an establishment process of thoughts. Most of us today have many things going in but because we don’t think deeply about them, they are discarded quickly (24-48 hours). When we commit our ways, works, plans to the Lord, we think about them. When we are committing to God we talk with Him about our deeds and think about things rather than superfluously doing things. When we think about things, they are established in our thought network. When things are established we move on to the next level and continuing being built, never staying at the same place for years because growth is happening! What a blessing!

Proverbs 15:15 (NKJV) — 15 All the days of the afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.

It’s your choice! Choose which you will be – afflicted or merry! We are not a victim of our circumstances! Most of us are not facing some life changing moment like somebody dying, we face momentary troubles of all sorts. Choose how you are going to live! If you think you are afflicted and everything is going wrong and everyone is against you and nothing goes your way, get saved! Really, you need to get saved (delivered) from that mindset and get a new one – that of merriment! You CAN choose to be merry and live like you are on a cruise ship with a continual feast.

I remember being at Couples in Jamaica for my 25^th anniversary. It is an all inclusive resort. When you wanted something to eat or drink, you just went and got it! It was a continual feast! I have been dreaming about going back ever since! So we can look at life and think toxically or we can think positively, it is our choice. When your dog can’t find his bone to play with, he doesn’t get depressed, he finds a sock or anything! Don’t get stuck on what you don’t have or wish you had, see what you do have from the marvelous supplier of your needs!
